Taiwan cracks down on piracy of Japanese drama

TOKYO -- Taiwanese cops, acting on a request from Japanese authorities, seized 10,000 pirated DVD copies of Japanese TV dramas from five street sellers on Saturday. Takero Goda, who heads Japan's intellectual property rights enforcement org, the Content Overseas Distribution Assn., told reporters the seizure is "just the tip of the iceberg." At the request of Japan's five commercial networks and pubcaster NHK, the enforcer linked with authorities in Taiwan to crack down on sellers of pirated Japanese DVDs. Facing increased enforcement by the Motion Picture Assn., pirates in Asia have shifted their focus from Hollywood pics to Japanese TV dramas, which have long been popular with regional auds. In Taiwan pirates produce DVDs of dramas that aired only two weeks earlier in Japan. Founded in 2002 by Japanese content companies and orgs, the Content Overseas Distribution Assn. has dedicated itself to stamping out Asian piracy of Japanese music, pics, toon and TV shows.
